What is the course about?
This course is about using different aspects of therapeutic writing to address your 'inner critic' as a medium for personal growth and healing. Through writing exercises, we can expose and reveal some of the unconscious message patterns we routinely send to ourselves, discovering insights and opportunities to revise our thinking and improve wellbeing. Creative writing is a key part of the course but please note that the focus is on personal development, not on writing techniques.
What will we cover?
We will use a variety of creative and expressive writing exercises to focus on the 'inner critic', on self confidence and self esteem. We will use various prompts such as: words, poems, art, post-cards, positive affirmations, stories, unsent letters and acrostics.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Identify how your inner critic may be limiting you and your potential
- Describe two different writing activities which can be used to access inner thoughts and feelings
- Identify at least two ways in which writing therapy can increase and benefit self awareness and/or self esteem.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is open to anyone who has ever enjoyed keeping a journal, has a personal interest in writing or writing for wellbeing. You will need to be fluent in English and be able to take part in discussions. It is beneficial for you to share your work, as hearing your words validated by others can be a powerful learning experience and can lead to deeper layers of realisation and increased confidence. However, you always decide what you wish to share.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is experiential and practical: you will have an opportunity to try out various writing exercises and we will use them as the basis for discussion and further exploration. The exercises include individual tasks, pair work, small and large group work. You may find it useful to keep a journal in between sessions to further enhance your self awareness and improve wellbeing.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please bring a notebook and pen/pencil.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
We offer further personal development courses that complement this one, such as:
PG612 - Journal writing of self-discovery
PG712 - Inklings: write yourself
PG698 - Mindfulness.
