Science guest lecture by Richard Knight : the geology of Kazakhstan – where East meets West

Course Date: Fri 8 Mar 2019
Location on this date: KS - Keeley Street
Kazakhstan's geology is of regional and global significance.

As the largest landlocked country in the world, with a population of only 18 million, Kazakhstan occupies a key position in Central Asia. With a long and strong history of regional trade, modern Kazakhstan is a vibrant and beautiful country, rich in natural resources, and underlain by stunning geology. An overview of the geology, its context within the network of neighbouring states, and the importance of some of the principle sedimentary basins (from an oil and gas perspective) will be discussed. The lecture will explore the significance of the Precaspian Basin in the west, where massive primordial carbonate reefs, the size of Central London, exist at 4-5 km depths below the surface: these contain immense resources which are of long-term strategic and sovereign importance.

Richard Knight is a professional geologist with over 28 years' experience in the energy sector. He has a PhD in Micropaleontology and he has lived and worked across the world including the Sultanate of Oman, Malaysia, Australia, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Russia, Central Asia, and closer to home in Europe.
