  9. Guest lecture evolutionary biology: The origins of life in hydro-thermal vents

    Evolutionary biologist Professor Nick Lane leads the UCL Research Frontiers Origins of Life programme. His work focuses on the role of bioenergetics in the origin of life and the evolution of cells. In this lecture he will present, for a non-specialist audience, some of the latest research in this field and explain why theories in this area are sometimes referred to as the ‘most counter-intuitive ideas in biology since Darwin’.





    Professor Nick Lane is the author of four critically acclaimed books on evolutionary biochemistry including Power, Sex and Suicide, Life Ascending, which won the 2010 Royal Society Prize for Science Book, and The Vital Question which was praised by Bill Gates as 'an amazing inquiry into the origins of life'. His work has been recognized by the Biochemical Society Award in 2015 and the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize in 2016. He is an enthusiastic promoter of science to wide audiences and a passionate defender of the value of experts and critical thinking in public life.
