What is the course about?
This series of walks is designed to introduce you to some of the photographic delights of London.
Through guided walks, you will learn about these locations and a range of skills and techniques to
photograph them effectively. Some of the walks will require a short tube journey, others are a short walk from City
Lit. The walks will last about 5 hours, so warm comfortable clothing and walking shoes are essential.
What will we cover?
- The basics of night and low light level photography
- Shutter speed settings and motion blur
- Aperture and shutter priority and manual functions.
- Using ambient light sources: natural and artificial.
- Photographic rights and responsibilities when photographing in public spaces.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Choose appropriate lenses for your image
- Control depth of field through aperture settings
- Demonstrate use of shutter speeds for intended effects
- Identify the technical demands of evening and night time photography.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is an intermediate course. You will be expected to have a knowledge of the basic manual functions of the
camera including aperture, shutter speeds, and ISO or have undertaken a beginner’s course in
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through the walks you will be given information about the area that can inform your photographic decisions. You
will be taught using a range of techniques including demonstrations, group and individual assistance and hand-outs.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please bring your camera (if you have one) to the classes and you may wish to bring a notebook and pen. It would
be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note: PC formatted hard drives can be read by
Apple Mac computers, but not written to). The Build photography studio (Kean St) is an annex and not part of the
main building; there is no reception. Please do not arrive more then 5 minutes before the start time of your class
and try the door before ringing the bell.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
The City lit has over seventy different practical and theoretical photography courses.
