Want to understand and use percentages? See the relationship between fractions and decimals? Be able to measure confidently and convert between units of measurement? Interpret graphs and basic statistics? In this course you will apply these skills to a variety of everyday situations including money, DIY and much more!

What is the course about?

You will learn to use percentages, fractions, decimals, measures, shapes and data handling. You will apply these skills to solving problems in a variety of everyday and work related contexts.

What will we cover?

The course will cover:
-problem solving
-understanding and using fractions, percentages and decimals
-estimation, approximation and rounding
-using negative numbers
-measurement: properties of shapes and size
-handling data.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, using a range of methods
-add and subtract decimal numbers and check answers to calculations
-recognise basic fractions and calculate fractions of a quantity
-calculate simple percentages
-measure, convert units of measure and work out perimeters, areas and volume
-understand and use negative numbers
-find the mean (average) and the range
-extract and interpret information from tables, diagrams, charts and graphs
-approximate and estimate numbers
-recognise and work with ratios and scale
-apply the above to real life problem contexts
-understand outcomes and explain results of calculations.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for fluent speakers of English. You should be able to use whole numbers up to 1000, add and subtract using 3-digit numbers, estimate calculations, use basic fractions and decimals, and extract information from tables and charts.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will be in a supportive group setting, which involves pair and small group work. The interactive whiteboard and computers will help your learning. Handouts, puzzles and worksheets will allow you to build up a folder of work which will be assessed at the end of the course. You will be given homework on a regular basis.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, ruler, pencil and calculator. Please also bring some lined A4 paper and a folder to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts, worksheets and links to useful websites to enable you to extend and practice your skills outside class.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

After sucessfully completing this course you should be able enrol for AM401B, the next part of Working Towards Level 1.
