Maths for work series - PAYE: how your pay is calculated

Know how your pay is calculated? Understand everything on your payslip? In this session we will look at vocabulary around pay and work through pay calculations using up-to-date government figures.

This course is FREE if you are employed and earn less than £19,890. You need to have lived in the UK or EU for the last 3 years and be a citizen of the UK or a country within the EU. You may also be eligible for this funding in other circumstances. When you come for assessment or enrolment, bring a pay slip dated within 3 months of the course start date, or a current employment contract that shows your gross salary.

What is the course about?

Understanding and using the vocabulary surrounding pay
Being able to access important information in relation to current taxes etc.
Being able to work out the process from the advertised pay to what you take home.

What will we cover?

percentages and the maths required to calculate them
the vocabulary of pay
interpret results and drawing conclusions.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Discuss pay using appropriate vocabulary
Work out take home pay from job adverts using percentage and other mathematical operations
Interpret a payslip.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is at level 2
You should be able to understand instructions in English and able to write short sentences.
You should be able to use a basic calculator.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will be in a supportive group setting, which involves pair and small group work. The interactive whiteboard and computers will help your learning. Handouts and worksheets will be provided by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a calculator. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Depending on your level of maths, you may like to join one of our Level 1 or 2 Functional Skills courses, or our GCSE maths courses which will start in Sept 2018. Your tutor will discuss this with you and arrange for an assessment to check level.
