Do you feel your opinion is not heard and that people with louder voices or bigger personalities cut through what you have to say? Learn and develop assertive, confident speaking in business or social situations.


What is the course about?

Learning how to develop assertive, confident speaking in business or social situations.

What will we cover?

Vocal technique including posture, breathing, resonance, articulation and intention.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Recognise the techniques for improving vocal communication
Develop a vocal work-out you can use in any situation.
Begin to apply what you have learnt in everyday life.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Open to all levels. The student should be prepared to reflect on their own vocal presentation and be open to self-development.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be a mixture of instruction, physical exercises, presentations and regular feedback from the instructor. All students will be expected to discuss their development and provide examples of situations in which they are experiencing difficulty.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Loose fitting clothes is advised.

If you want to learn how to speak more clearly, project your voice and add enthusiasm to it in terms of pitch and emphasis, this is the course for you.

I did this course in January 2016. The tutor had substantial subject knowledge. He was able to identify individual needs of students and work with them on improving aspects of voice and resonance. A safe space was created for all to work in.Be prepared to keep up the exercises between classes to gain maximum benefit.

Vernon Thompson Tutor Website

Vernon Thompson M.A; P.G.C.E Vernon has been responsible for overseeing all Voice Speech and Communication courses in the School of Performing Arts (almost 200 per year) since September 2005. He is also Course Leader for the year-long OCN accredited Foundation in Drama course. He regularly directs student productions, most recently The Laramie Project (2019) and the Agents' Showcase (2017). Voice specialities include Shakespearean text and practical application of resonance and support. He works as Voice Consultant to Channel 4 News; private clients currently include BBC newsreaders and an international model. Vernon has an MA in Voice Studies from Central School of Speech & Drama and PGCE from City University. Previous posts include Voice teaching at Webber Douglas. Outside Build Vernon also works as a freelance director (Teatro Franco Parenti, Milan 2019; Hen and Chickens, Islington 2017) and produces a season of rep theatre every summer in Bournemouth with London Repertory Players.
