Join this introductory class to learn all about leather and explore a range of techniques and processes to make attractive leather jewellery including bangles, cuffs and earrings.

What is the course about?

Explore a range of techniques and processes in leather jewellery making, including moulding, joining and surface and finishing techniques. By the end of the course you'll be able to construct a bangle or cuff using your own ideas. This course is ideal for complete beginners to jewellery-making, or equally more experienced makers wishing to work with new materials, or anyone needing a refresher.

What previous students loved about the course:

"The thought and preparation behind it. Every week we made something using a different technique. Lots of handouts and resources. Lots of help and attention given to everyone."

What will we cover?

- Learn how to make a simple bracelet or cuff to learn and practise basic leather-working and finishing skills
- You will be introduced to various forms of surface decoration and how to manipulate leather including moulding and joining leather using a variety of techniques
- You will also learn about jewellery findings and leather fixings and how to use them with leather to create necklaces and earrings as well as cuffs and bracelets
- Learn about different types and qualities of leather and how they are used
- You will be encouraged and supported to help turn your ideas into a realistic finished piece.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Make a simple cuff and bracelet using a variety of techniques
- Make a pair of earrings
- Make surface-decorated leather samples.
- Identify different types and qualities of leather and how they are used.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for all levels – both those new to leather and those who have completed other leather jewellery courses.
For students who have already completed a course in leather jewellery, the course will develop your skills working with thicker leather, additional techniques and provide the opportunity to practise and develop skills from previous courses.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information. You should be happy using numbers and able to do simple measurements.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations, practical work and discussions. You will be taught as a group and helped individually as required. Handouts will accompany demonstrations. The course is structured to manage the work within the class, although you may enjoy trying out your skills at home.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Tools and equipment: Build supplies basic leather, scalpels, glue, needles, scissors, thread and findings for you to experiment with the techniques taught. However, the materials provided are limited and you will be recommended to source your own special leather or other materials as you progress and wish to realise your own designs. The tutor will give you advice on suppliers.
