Do you need more help with your reading, writing, spelling? Do you find reading whole words difficult? Are you wondering how the sounds of words connect with how to write and spell them? This course will help you use phonics to develop your English. You will learn how to hear and identify the individual sounds which make up a word and then blend the sounds together form the whole word. By being able to relate sight and sound - written letters and the sounds associated with them - a whole new world will open up to you and you will start to feel confident that you can read words, spell them and use them.

What is the course about?

This course is for students who find reading and writing difficult especially being able to (i) read the individual words you see and (ii) write words you hear. So this course will help you break down and identify the sounds you hear within a word and then relate the sounds you hear to the correct letter. You will also start being able to identify which sounds are connected to each English letter.

What will we cover?

The most important topics we will cover are:
• how to associate sounds with letters and letter with sounds
• how to break down words you hear into their constituent sounds
• how to blend these individual sounds into whole words
• how to break down words you see into their constituent sounds
• how to relate the letters that make up words into their individual sounds
• how to use this association between letters and their sounds to help you identify how a word should be spelt
• how to use this association between letters and their sounds to help you identify how a word should be pronounced.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

•be more confident in your reading and writing .
• use your knowledge of sounds to read a short text
• associate sounds with letters and letter with sounds
• break down words you hear into their constituent sounds

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for fluent speakers of English working at Entry levels 1 and 2. It is designed for learners who find reading and writing whole words, including spelling, difficult. You should be able to recognise and write all the letters of the alphabet.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will be in a supportive group setting, which involves individual, pair and small group work. You will work on activities such as games, quizzes and short stories which focus on specific sounds. The interactive whiteboard and computers will help your learning. In class you may use your own mobile phone or tablet to help you look up information and spellings. Handouts and worksheets will allow you to build up a folder of work. You will be given homework on a regular basis. To ensure progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, pencil, highlighter, paper and a file to keep your work in. You may bring your own laptop, tablet or other device with you to help with your learning. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

When you successfully complete this course your tutor will discuss what he next appropriate step is for you. You may wish to do our English for Life (E1-E2) class or Improve your Spelling.
