What is the course about?

This course aims to enable you to communicate in French in everyday situations. It will strengthen your knowledge and introduce new structures and vocabulary gradually. You will build up your confidence in all four skills with the emphasis on speaking and listening.

What will we cover?

Topics: Personal identity, family, profession. Decribe your basic routine and leisure activities. Order drinks and snack. Ask for direction. Describe where you live. Likes and dislikes

Grammar: present tense, positive, negative and interrogative forms, nouns, adjectives, demonstratives, possessives, articles.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- talk about yourself and ask others about themselves (name, nationality, job, family)

- tell the time

- describe broadly your routine and leisure activities

- Ask and understand directions

- describe where you live

- Order drinks and snacks

- Use some forms of ER verbs accuretly

Please note that the above outcomes are flexible as the pace of the lessons will depend on the achievements of the group of students.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners' course: no knowledge of the French language is required.

For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide or at
You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills

- role plays

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

I wouldn’t recommend this course. It’s very slow paced. No homework.

This is the perfect course for someone starting completely from scratch, or returning to French after a long break (like me) having learnt at school originally. The atmosphere is relaxed, the pace of learning is spot on and the encouragement for everyone to participate is always at the heart of every lesson. Thoroughly enjoyable and I'm looking forward to the next module

You should have some knowledge of the French language and be prepared to do the homework. It's a great course and you will learn not only to speak French, but also understand it.

Well structured course with lots of interactive exercises. The teaching must be the best I have ever experienced on an adult language course.

The class was not a complete beginners class. I have absolute no French but many in the class had houses in France, learnt it at school and had knowledge of the language.
