Do you struggle with punctuation? Are you confident in your use of paragraphs? Do you need to extend your vocabulary? Throughout this course you will improve on these skills whilst you read and write different types of texts.

What is the course about?

This course will help you develop and improve your skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and communication. You will develop your planning and comprehension skills.

What will we cover?

Topics will include:
- identifying different text types
- identifying the main points from a text
- formal and informal language
- writing for different purposes and audiences etc.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- read and understand a variety of texts
- write longer texts using appropriate style and grammatically correct sentences
- plan and proofread writing etc.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is Level 1 students. You will already be able to:

Read simple sentences and instructions without help.
Write a short text independently using common conjunctions and adjectives.
Use basic punctuation and spell personal details and common words correctly.
Understand numbers from lists, tables and diagrams and use knowledge of alphabetical order to find correct meanings of words in a dictionary.
Speak clearly to be heard and understood.
Ask and respond to straightforward questions.
Extract simple information from lists.

You will need to attend an Initial Assessment & Interview session before enrolling.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through whole class work teaching, group work, pair work. You will also do work on your own as directed by the tutor. You will be expected to do a lot of self-study and complete homework regularly.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

- a folder, A4 paper and a pen
- a dictionary.

When you successfully complete this course, you may join the second part of the course AE401B.
