What is the course about?
Working with collage is a direct communication from eye to hand and the delight in creating the unexpected. The course aims to help you loosen up, to take risks and be playful in your approach and to explore different ways of working. There will be an opportunity to look at how contemporary artists and designers use collage in their work.
What will we cover?
- basic design elements; shape, line, structure, colour, texture and contrast.
- juxtaposition of image and type.
-generating colour palettes.
-collage work in contemporary Design practice.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- demonstrate an awareness of the basic visual design elements.
- generate artwork using a variety of collage methods.
- apply colour palettes to artwork.
- create a series of collages.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for all levels.
This course is suitable for complete beginners though it would also benefit those who have previous experience using collage as a medium to generate interesting visual ideas.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through a series of practical exercises, presentations, individual tutorials and group discussion. You may be asked to undertake some work between classes if necessary.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will need an A4 or A5 size sketchbook to record information, and a set of fine liner Black pens.

You can further develop your skills and interest in Collage through a range of courses at the Build in graphic design, illustration, printmaking, animation and design software courses.
