Develop your own cartooning style through a range of traditional drawing and digital techniques. Create a portfolio of work in preparation for professional commissions.


What is the course about?

In this course you will learn how to realise cartoon ideas as single images with and without captions and strip cartoons. You will learn how to express emotion humorously and how to compose an image to enhance its meaning and wit. You will use the traditional drawing techniques of pencil and pen as well as digital techniques for different colouring techniques, creating collages and captions.

- Painting in Photoshop
- Creating surreal and witty collages using Photoshop
- The relationship between the strip cartoon and time.
- Creative captioning
- Formatting and storing work.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand the dynamic relationship of text to image
- Create an expressive composition
- Scan an image and import it into Photoshop
- Use the paint tools in Photoshop
- Create basic selections in Photoshop
- Edit transformations in Photoshop
- Use layers in Photoshop
- Critically appraise your cartoon work and the work of others
- Save and store your work in a range of formats.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course, no prior experience is required.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations, exercises, group and individual assistance and notes.
Please note the Build uses Apple Mac computers in Digital arts and Photography.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course.
You may wish to bring a memory stick or a portable hard drive to store your work.

Develop your skills further with VK401 Drawing for comic books, VF502 Drawing caricatures, VG272 Photoshop: stage 1 or VG282 Photoshop: stage 2. You can also compliment your illustration skills with a range of courses in illustration, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.
