Description

What is the course about?

Forearmed with a solid foundation in the bidding of playing of bridge, we must now face the opposition! Consolidate the use of overcalls and learn how takeout doubles can snatch contracts away from your opponents. Come and develop your killer instinct at the card table!

What will we cover?

We will focus on learning to compete in a competitive auction and consolidate defensive and declare play. We will cover when and when not to overcall and how to use and respond to a take-out double. You will be introduced to the concept of conventions by learning when and how use Stayman.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• know the basic requirements for a suit overcall and how to differentiate between a simple overcall and a jump overcall
• Explain what is meant by a take-out double and know when to use it
• Respond to your partner’s takeout double
• Bid Stayman and how to respond to a Stayman enquiry.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course assumes a basic knowledge of bridge including how to bid to a part-score or game contract, without opposition, in a suit or no trumps. A good understanding of English is essential. If you wish to speak to the tutor prior to enrolling please contact the Humanities department.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching methods include prepared hands to play; Q & A; quizzes and recapitulation. All handouts will be provided including worksheets for optional homework practice and if you have access to the internet recommendations will be made as to downloadable bridge materials.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no additional costs other than note-taking materials.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
