Bridge 3: module 1 - develop your play of the cards (evening)

If you have learnt to play Standard English Acol and want to improve your card play, then this course is for you!


What is the course about?

Improving declarer and defensive play in Bridge.

Please note that there will be no class on Friday 18 October 2019, and the end date of this course changed to Friday 29 November 2019..

What will we cover?

We will look at protective bidding; 2nd and 3rd hand play; signals and discards.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Know and apply the principles of protective bidding
• Play and understand why it is usually right for the second hand to play low and the third hand high
• Learn how to use attitude and suit preference signals and discards.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at intermediate bridge players with the equivalent of 18 months’ bridge tuition who wish to develop their card technique. If you wish to speak to the tutor regarding the suitability of this course for you, please contact the Humanities department. .A good understanding of English is essential.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is very much a ‘hands on’ course where you will be playing cards immediately. In addition, there will be worksheets and quizzes to help consolidate learning. You do not need to do anything outside the class but you will be encouraged to do so.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You need only bring notetaking materials.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You might want to progress onto the follow-on course - Bridge 3: module 2 - more decalrer and defensive play, (UBD26) which starts in January 2020.

Vanessa King Tutor Website

Vanessa King is a lecturer in Medieval and early Modern History at Regents University. She also teaches at Birbeck and Goldsmiths Colleges, University of London. Her expertise in medieval matters means she is frequently called upon to give public lectures and speak on BBC Radio. At Build Vanessa teaches London history and offers day schools on all aspects of medieval and early modern history. She also runs bridge courses at all levels. Vanessa's philosophy of teaching is to make history come alive through informative presentations with a good sense of humour.
