Description

What is the course about?

The course aims to equip you with the skills to converse in everyday situations using Arabic and to communicate in writing in a variety of situations. Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken form close to it are used in the class. Reference will be made to the major colloquial varieties, when relevant.

What will we cover?

Based on Mastering Arabic 2 (chapters 8-10) and the tutor's own material, the course has a strong emphasis on communication skills using mainly Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken variety close to it.

Topics: Clothes and colours, education and training, news and media.

Grammar: forms of the verb, doubled verbs, weak verbs, adverbs of time and place, the Idafa and the interrogatives.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Describe and compare people, places, objects and situations

- Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and high frequency vocabulary

- Write simple texts, e.g. a letter or a description of events/places/people

- Ask questions in a formal/informal way

- Give reasons

- Talk about the past and present

- Discuss about news and media

- Understand Arabic everyday life and culture

- Develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses, such as asking for repetition or clarification.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course offers progression from Arabic 2:lower module 1. Students should have studied Arabic for more than a
year.

For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide, or at http://bildutrapagaran.info/self-assess-your-level. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.
