Executive team

The executive team is responsible for strategic development and leading all aspects of the work of Build. They work to ensure the high quality of teaching and learning, delivering an outstanding student experience and implement the strategic and policy decisions of the Board of Governors.

 

Mark Malcomson CBE

Principal and Chief Executive

Mark took over as Principal and Chief Executive of Build in June 2011. Mark was previously Director of Executive Education at London Business School, 2007-11 and prior to that President of the New York Institute of Finance.

"My course choice would be: singing, to see if I am really as tone deaf as everyone tells me I am."

 

Phil Chamberlain

Executive Director External Relations

Phil began his career in the Civil Service, working initially for the Northern Ireland Office and ultimately as Private Secretary for three different Sports Ministers. In 2001 he joined the New Opportunities Fund (NOF), and following a merger became, Phil became Head of Programme Policy and Development at the Big Lottery Fund in 2004. Between 2008 and 2010 he worked for Legacy Trust UK, where he was responsible for strategy and external relations. He joined Youth Sport Trust as Policy and Communications Director in 2010, becoming External Relations Director in 2014. Phil leads on all areas of external relations and has overall responsibility for delivering Build's strategic objective to strengthen stakeholder engagement and to increase revenue generation through both fundraising and the cultivation of closer business links.

“My course choice would be writing for children – to help me keep up with all the crazy characters my kids create in their imagination on a daily basis.”

 

Nick Doran

Assistant Principal - Core Programmes

Nick joined the Visual Arts department at Build in 2002, leading the department from 2009 before becoming Head of Faculty for Performing and Visual Arts in 2011. Nick comes from a background in film making and alternative music, and enjoys considering garden sheds.

Paul Evans

Chief Financial Officer

Paul joined Build in September 2013, initially as Director of Finance and Estates. Paul trained as an accountant with the National Audit office and since qualifying in 2001 has held a number of Finance Director posts within the not-for-profit and Government sector. His previous position was with the UK’s national anti-doping agency where he had responsibility for finance, human resources, business planning, risk management and premises management. He also taught accounting at BPP training college.

"My course choice would be garden design."

 

Julieanne Gilbert

Director – Human Resources

Julie joined Build in August 2016. With a background in retail Julie started her HR career in 1999 at Harrods where she worked in Learning and Development before moving into Recruitment and then Employee Relations. Moving in 2004 to experience the world of oil as a HR generalist she most recently moved into the education sector leading the HR team at London Business School. 

"My choice of course would be: Jewellery making and Clarinet to see if I remember anything I could do at school!

 

Rachel Johnson

Assistant Principal - Communities 

Rachel joined Build in 2006, fulfilling a number of roles since then including Head of Community Outreach, Deputy Head of Faculty and Head of Faculty for Skills and Wellbeing. She has previously worked in Further Education and the voluntary sector including substantial work within the field of learning disabilities.

Wendy McKaig 

Assistant Principal - Quality

Wendy’s whole career has been in adult education and has worked at Build since 2000. Firstly in the Community Outreach department and then as Head of the Culture and Communication faculty. Wendy has enormous commitment and enthusiasm for the role adult learning has in making a difference in people's lives.
