Working with bereavement and loss

We'll use the theories of Bowlby, Winnicott and Klein to explore your reactions to bereavement and loss, and increase your ability to help others work through their reactions. This course is aimed at counsellors, other helping professionals and trainees. It is not aimed at people seeking help for the specific course subjects.

What is the course about?

You will gain a greater understanding of issues around bereavement and loss and of bereavement counselling.

What will we cover?

Introduction to bereavement and cultural attitudes which affect the way we deal with it.We will also include aspects of attachment theory, Dr Colin Murray Parkes bereavement counselling model, and exploration of your own bereavement issues and coping strategies.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Explain several common aspects of bereavement issues.
Describe 1 or 2 aspects of attachment theory.
Name the seven steps in bereavement and loss.
Recognise 1 or 2 personal issues, particularly around beginnings and endings.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge required. This workshop is aimed at people working in the helping professions.
You will need to be able to address ideas and issues, which can be difficult, in an educational context.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor input and discussion; experiential work in pairs and small groups; using your own histories and case studies & role play exercises.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None. A reading list will be given. A link will be emailed to you before the course so you can download handouts. Bibliography provided.
