Learn which bits of your body do what to produce your own unique voice & speech, and use this knowledge and understanding with practical exercises to clarify and strengthen your vocal communication.


What is the course about?

Gaining awareness of the vocal components (the anatomy) and understanding as to how these components are brought together to form sound (the physiology). Through practical exercises using this knowledge and insight to gain vocal confidence and make one`s voice unique, individual and effective.

What will we cover?

Anatomy & Physiology of the vocal organs.
Anatomy & Physiology of the breath and of the organs of articulation
Value of Relaxation and Release and the effects it has on the voice.
Benefits & Pitfalls of the individual`s attitude on the voice.
Practical Exercises to demonstrate and appreciate all of the above.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Complete a blank anatomical diagram with appropriate headings.
Explain in own words how the voice works.
Demonstrate varying `attitudes` through use of voice placement.
Change your habitual `way of speaking` to something new and previously undiscovered.
Attain a degree of vocal confidence through analysis and practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners through to experienced students who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of Voice Anatomy and Physiology.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group, pair and individual work. You will be taught through tutor explanation, demonstration, practical exercises, general & individual feedback, discussion and Q&A, with reference to diagrams and printed hand-outs.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a notebook, a pen and a folder to retain handouts etc. Wear comfortable clothes so as to move freely.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Voice Technique: Beginners.
