Description

What is the course about?

Five American Presidents - Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon - shaped the post-War world both in their own country and well beyond their borders. America changed hugely during the thirty years of their presidencies and each of them played an important part in that. In the same way, the Cold War and various conflicts shaped an emergence from historical isolationism to a truly global power.

What will we cover?

We explore each President: their life stories; their personalities; their policies; and how they changed the face of their country and the world.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Identify key policies associated with particular post-war presidents
- Undertsand the nature of the Presidency - how it shapes the United States as well as its limitations.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an ‘introductory’ course and does not assume any previous study or reading although you will need a reasonable standard of English to keep up with the course. As with most of our history and current affairs courses, an open mind and a willingness to listen to and think about views with which you do not always agree, are more important than specific levels of skills.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is lecture based with some discussion. This will be supplemented by videos, and other materials where relevant.

There is no work outside of the class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring pen and paper.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
