To develop and improve your basic Tap skills and increase your vocabulary of steps and sequences. Gain a greater understanding of rhythm, tempo and syncopation. Suitable for students of all ages with good general fitness. Tap shoes essential.


What is the course about?

You will be able to practice, improve and develop your basic Tap skills and increase your tap vocabulary and sequences. You will develop your understanding of rhythm, tempo and syncopation.. You will learn and perform a routine that is developed over the classes.

What will we cover?

You will learn and be introduced to some classic American steps that are found in Rhythm Tap, such as paradiddles, maxi-fords, pick-up and wings.. Students will be encouraged to perform steps and sequences solo.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Perform all basic double and treble steps.
Perform basic American time steps, including the Manhattan time step.
Understand and dance to different tempos Perform a fun routine.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is ideal for students who have completed the beginner/improver courses or have a strong basic knowledge of Tap.

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

As a group and individually.

You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt. Consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It Is essential to have good tap shoes. The proper shoes can really improve your technique and give you a much better feeling for the style of dance. Tap shoes should be fitted with tap plates using screws (no rivets). Specialised stockists such as Gamba, Freed and Dancia, which have outlets in and around Covent Garden, can provide appropriate footwear. Clothing should be comfortable and loose.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Continue with tap: improvers or speak to the tutor about an intermediate class.
