What is the course about?

You will learn, practise and be able to perform all the basic steps of American tap dance. You will gain a basic understanding of rhythm and syncopation. You will also learn a fun routine which will feature the steps and moves
you have learned.

What will we cover?

We will concentrate on learning and mastering the three basic steps - shuffle, tap-step and ball-change. We will learn a basic timestep and the basic American paddle-and-roll. We will look at tap styles and gain inspiration from watching videos of classic tap performances.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Perform basic double and treble steps.
Perform a simple time-step.
Differentiate between different tempos and rhythms.
Appreciate differences between English and American styles.
Dance a simple tap routine.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for complete beginners. Some experience of dance (jazz/contemporary etc.) is useful but not essential.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In a group, with individual attention.

HEALTH CHECK
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It is essential to have good shoes and tap shoes are necessary for this class. Having the correct shoes can really improve your technique and give you a much better feeling for the style of dance. The tap shoes should be fitted with tap plates using screw fittings (no rivets). Specialised stockists such as Gamba, Freed and Dancia, which have outlets in and around Covent Garden can provide appropriate footwear. Clothing should be comfortable and loose.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You will be encouraged to enrol on to the Improver's class and progress to the intermediate class.

General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.

This course focuses on improving technical skills, tap precision and musical phrasing and is an excellent choice for those wishing to progress to an advanced level. The tutor has a genuine passion for tap and is very supportive in encouraging you to achieve your full potential; always being able to identify areas that need to be worked on and suggesting methods of improvement. It is a demanding class where we work hard but also have a great deal of fun - thanks to a wonderful tutor and great camaraderie between the students.

This is a very enjoyable class led by a tutor with an extensive knowledge of his subject and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of new step combinations for us to learn! Everyone is friendly and very supportive. The choreography is taught at a reasonably fast pace but the tutor is always willing to go over anything that you're unsure of, so there's no chance of getting left behind. If you know your tap basics and enjoy learning new combinations and routines in a lively environment, then this could well be the class for you.
