Description

What is the course about?

The course aims to show students how to cope with everyday situations with increased confidence; to increase
knowledge of grammar and word order; to begin to discuss topical issues.
This course teaches you the Swedish language with a focus on speaking, using a variety of methods and sources.

What will we cover?

Talking and asking detailed questions about hobbies, activities and work as well as expanding vocabulary related to when and where things are happening (location and time). We will also cover some Swedish culture including holidays, literature and film and practice expressing our own opinions and beliefs in different matters. Sources are contemporary and will include videos, news reports, blogs, works of literature and texts from a workbook.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-Have expanded knowledge of particle verbs and reflexive verbs.
-Able to use reflexive possessive pronouns (sin and sig).
-Feel confident using the imperative, past perfect and future tenses.
-Have expanded ability to use the present perfect and pluperfect tenses.
-Have an increased grasp of the pronunciation of the Swedish vowel sounds and the R-, 7- and 20 - sound.
- Be able to use correct word and sentence stress in speech and when reading. Be aware of the Swedish pitch accent.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course requires the student to have completed Swedish 2 module 1 or equivalent. Students should be able to make basic conversation about everyday situations, read short instructions and understand news reports in simple Swedish. They should also have a good knowledge of simple past and future tenses, be familiar with the present perfect and pluperfect tenses and feel confident with present tense.
You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through a combination of group and pair exercises as well as individual work. Students will be expected to spend 2 hours per week on their homework which will often combine exercises from a book with tasks relating to their personal interests and surroundings. Lessons are focused on speaking and understanding from listening but reading and writing will also be practiced. Lessons are social and it is important to be able to engage with others in a respectful way.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

We will be working with Nybörjarsvenska Textbook and exercise book (yellow and blue books with a building on the front) so do purchase these before your first session. We will be working with the latest edition which can be purchased from the European Bookshop or Grant and Cutler.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
