Sunday ballroom

Course Dates: 23/09/18 - 09/12/18
Time: 13:30 - 15:30
Location: KS - Keeley Street

If you are new to this dance form, come and gain a basic foundation in popular ballroom and Latin American dances. You'll perform the dances with different members of the class.

What is the course about?

The course will cover three dances: The graceful and smooth Ballroom dance the Waltz, the cheeky Chachacha (CCC) from the American Latin field and the fast stepping Quickstep from the Ballroom field.

What will we cover?

Waltz - Closed Change Step, Natural Turn, Reverse Turn, Whisk, Progressive Chassé and Outside Change.
Cha Cha Cha - Forward and back basic, Underarm Turn, Hand to Hand, Spot Turn, New York’s and Three Chas
Quickstep - Quarter Turn, Reverse Turn, Progressive Chassé, Locksteps and Natural Turn with Hesitation.

Steps will be incorporated into a routine that you will be able to dance in the sessions, outside the classroom environment and dancing venues.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Perform the three dances with correct footwork and to the correct tempo of music.
Lead and follow with different learners on the course in the three dances.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at beginners and those who need to brush up on their existing dancing skills.

A beginner’s dance class isn’t just for newcomers. In any beginner’s dance class there will be student’s from all types of backgrounds. We all have different learning techniques and paces. If your first class seems overwhelming and you can’t get it the first time, don’t worry: dance is heavily reliant on repetition so it will happen. We want you to learn and to have fun so just give it your best and keep coming back!

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions.
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within the three dances.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The tutor will demonstrate the steps and will give verbal instructions. You will practise dancing the steps with a partner and then to music.

There will be no work outside the class but you will be given handouts about the steps taught, so that you can practise the routines at home.

You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No other costs involved but you should wear loose fitting clothes, no trainers, flip-flops or slingback shoes, and bring a drink.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Sunday ballroom: improvers is a continuation where we will continue to develop and progress, working on improving leading and following skills. Learners will build on their presentation skills by using their arms, hands and legs while dancing the steps.

General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.

I loved this class. I'm not a natural dancer by any means, but the teacher was patient and friendly and everyone in the class was supportive of each other. So with a bit of hard work and practice at home I have learned to dance! I'm delighted. I enjoyed it so much I did the whole three terms of beginners and now I'm going on to improvers. I've been out dancing socially with other people from the group and everything! If you want to learn to dance this is a great place to start. It's not an easy skill to learn as an adult but it's fun and it's worth it. The teacher is brilliant and really goes the extra mile to help us and make the class an enjoyable experience.

I really enjoyed this course. The atmosphere was very friendly. The teaching was excellent. I learned a lot of thing which I hope to be able to apply in the social dance environment. My technique has certainly improved.

I haven't danced since school when I was 8 and then I danced the girls' part so I was a bit nervous - not to say facing the wrong way, but I found the course very enjoyable and engaging. It moves along at quite a pace and there is lots to take in but the handouts help to remind one of the sequences of steps and I plan to try it all out at a dance soon. The teacher was very inclusive and there was a good feeling of camaraderie so I didn't feel anyone was left out or sidelined. Overall a good basic introduction - I shall certainly be back for another course. I don't feel I am one of nature's dancers but at least I am now heading the right way!

As beginners my husband and I felt quite self conscious when we turned up for our first ballroom class. We needn't have worried! The tutor is a great teacher, so encouraging and patient. She also brought the group together so everyone had a chance to take part and enjoy themselves. We'll definitely be signing up for more ballroom in the Spring term.

I started off well but, as the course progressed, found myself struggling more and more to keep up, until in the end I all but gave up. If you are both new to dancing, and are not naturally competent in this area, it could be all just too much. The pressure to complete the syllabus in the time allocated meant that we moved on before I could properly master each new move, and it seemed to get more difficult to remember each new addition, even if the movements individually were not difficult. However, as so often, I seemed to be the only one who had this problem, so perhaps I am just not cut out to be a dancer, even at the most basic level.
