What is the course about?

String Easter School is a fun and social way to consolidate and develop further your playing technique, explore new repertoire, play in large and small ensembles and improve your music reading and sight-reading. Also aims to build your confidence and introduce you to new techniques and styles of music.

What will we cover?

bowing: speed and pressure, bow distribution, playing on and off the string
Intonation: how to listen and tune better
Playing in positions above 1st
Tips and tricks for reading music faster and improving your sight-reading
Playing in ensembles: how to listen, count, and follow a conductor and other players.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Employ a wider range of bowing techniques
Play better in tune
Sight-read more quickly and accurately
Play your instrument with increased confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for string players at Grade 3 level and above who have some confidence with music reading. You should be keen to learn new techniques and repertoire.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Music will be sent out beforehand to give an opportunity for practice before the course
You will be taught via:
- Explanations and demonstrations from the tutors
- Group playing of solo and ensemble repertoire
- Some individual playing
- Playing with the whole ensemble and with smaller groups
- Feedback from your tutor and peers
- Critique of your own and others’ playing.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your instrument, a notebook, pen and pencil. Musical resources will be provide by the tutors.
