Description

What is the course about?

This lively workshop is for singers and actors with at least 3 years singing tuition who wish to further develop their vocal technique and performance skills in the Music Theatre repertoire. The focus is on singing and good vocal technique but there are some opportunities for end-of-term presentations in semi-formal concert situations.

What will we cover?

- Physical and vocal exercises and guidance on technique.
- Voice work to gain the vocal qualities and musical styles for music theatre
- How to broaden your individual repertoire
- Guidance on choosing suitable repertoire for your voice type
- Guidance on audition techniques and strategies
- Communicating with an audience
- Help with constructive criticism in order to gain a better understanding of the voice.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Perform the studied songs to a reasonable standard and from memory;
- Choose appropriate repertoire;
- Understand the varying vocal demands for different styles;
- Demonstrate a broadened approach and show a better vocal technique for this type of repertoire.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need to have a relatively secure technique and be vocally confident enough to try new techniques/vocal exercises in front of other class members
You do not need to sight-read music, but you must be able to independently learn new repertoire on a regular basis, and be confident singing in front of the class therefore a general understanding of musical notation is required.
To be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

If you are new to Build singing classes, please take a moment to read our blog: Choosing a singing class at City lit which lists our full sequence of singing classes. You could also drop in to one of our advice sessions where we can hear you sing and help you choose the right course. Please bring a piece to sing with simple piano accompaniment.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The class begins with a short vocal warm up and specific technical exercises (you may wish to book a practice room at City lit before your class if you need more time to warm-up than this lesson allows).
Each class follows a practical workshop format (group and individual presentations with a professional accompanist) with discussion arising out of work in progress and exchange of ideas.
There may be class songs chosen by the tutor but you will also be expected to choose your own repertoire from a specified period/topic focus. You will need to work on your repertoire at home, and daily practice is essential for progress.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Note book and pencil, sheet music as required and perhaps a course book if required. You are encouraged to acquire copies of music you are singing during the year. Music may be purchased new or second-hand and/or borrowed from local libraries. Westminster Central Music Library (Victoria) and the Barbican Music Library have very comprehensive collections. Suitable scores may also be available from http://imslp.org/.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may continue with Music Theatre Workshop modules as long as you wish or you may like to explore some of our classical singing classes to further expand your vocal repertoire.
You may also like to consider supplementary classes such as music theory or a piano class to help support your learning.

General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.
