What is the course about?

This one day course looks at one of the most turbulent chapters in London’s long history, from AD 900 to AD1100.
This period sees the mid-Saxon settlement of Lundenwic abandoned, a new town laid out within the old Roman city
wall, and then invasions and occupations first by the Vikings and then by the Normans.

What will we cover?

Why the old mid Saxon settlement was abandoned, the form and function of the newly-planned town laid out be
Alfred the Great, the impact made on London by the Vikings and then the Normans.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Appreciate the dramatic changes in London’s topography that resulted from the major political and military events
that shaped this period and London’s subsequent development.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course assumes no prior knowledge of London’s history ( although background reading would be a sensible
preparation) As important would be an enthusiastic interest in our capital’s long and convoluted development. A
keen eye, an open mind and a desire to question would be appreciated,.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course opens in the classroom with an introductory lecture-based presentation, and this is followed by a guided
walk around the streets and sites of London.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Stout comfortable (flat) shoes for walking and clothes that can be adapted to suit the changeable English climate;
your topped up Oyster Card or travel pass.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

London history and archaeology courses starting in September. See prospectus or website.
