What is the course about?

The greatest praise an artist can get is being selected to put up a new exhibition. We all want our work to be seen... But how do we prepare for this major event? What steps should we take to ensure the best experience possible? This course will look into some of the finer details in exhibiting your work including everything from obtaining opportunities, dealing with galleries and contracts, to proper packaging and handling, to Do-It-Yourself projects and independently curated exhibitions. Practical topics like hanging, lighting, layout will also be discussed.

What will we cover?

- From studio to exhibition: preparing your work and what that means.
- Contracts: what to look out for, what is acceptable, what an artist can ask for.
- DIY projects.
- Installation, layout & lighting (exhibition design).

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Enter into your new exhibition opportunity with confidence
- Utilise tools to ensure smooth transactions when dealing with galleries, curators and other artists
- Gain an understanding of the importance of lighting and hanging
-Choosing frames and mounts.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for all levels of students and artists. Basic knowledge of computer searching tools and word processing platforms will be helpful.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This intensive 1-day course will involve in-class presentations, samples, group discussions and projects. Group participation will be key to getting the most out of this course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Note-taking and writing will be a necessity in this class. A personal computer or tablet may be desirable if available.
