Problem solving techniques

Course Dates: 29/06/19
Time: 10:30 - 17:30
Location: KS - Keeley Street

We may face problems every day but we don’t have to waste energy struggling to solve them. This participatory workshop will show you a range of useful and practical techniques to help navigate everyday problems.

What is the course about?

We all face daily problems, from dealing with travel disruptions to forgetting vital ingredients; avoiding distraction, keeping to an exercise routine or sticking to a budget. This course offers techniques and processes to help you work through some of these regular but frustrating problems in a measured way. In this interactive workshop you will learn some of these techniques and have the chance to share any you use that might be valuable to others. Note this workshop is focussed on every day problems and is not about how to solve major problems in your life, nor is it suitable for anything which might require counselling or therapy.

What will we cover?

Essentially, we will look at the following:
- How to define problems
- How to see them from different perspectives
- How to come up with creative solutions.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Define a problem so that it is clear and specific
- Challenge your assumptions about a problem and how it might be solved
- Describe how to use metaphor to help solve some problems
- Describe at least two other techniques to help solve problems.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You don’t need any prior knowledge but you should be happy about working with other students in small groups. If English isn’t your first language then you should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions and take part in discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course is run as a workshop and therefore is quite participatory. It will be a combination of short lectures and demonstrations followed by exercises done in pairs or small groups. There will also be small group and full group discussions, but no work outside the class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a pad and pen for making notes.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

There are a number of short courses at Build which complement this workshop or might be of interest, they include: Creativity and lateral thinking; Be the designer of your life; Finding direction; Life balance; Habits of highly effective living, Get your ideas to fly. You will also be given a booklist for further reading at the end of the course.
