Are you not quite ready for GCSE Maths.? Do you need to brush up on your skills to enable you to start the GCSE in September with a good foundation? Then this is the course for you!


What is the course about?

The course covers the basic skills you should have before you start an intensive GCSE course in maths. You will practice and gain confidence with these skills and use them in a variety of contexts.

What will we cover?

- Some of the more everyday applications of the subject involving percentages, fractions and decimals
- basic statistics
- the Imperial and Metric system
- shapes and their properties
- introduction to algebra

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- work with mathematics with greatly increased confidence
- use maths as a tool to solve problems
- apply maths successfully in everyday situations
- start your GCSE maths course with a good foundation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for those with strong Level 1 and some Level 2 skills already. To get on to this course, you will need to show that your numeracy/maths skills are at this level. You will be asked to complete an initial assessment. Our initial assessment will check if you can do the following:

- Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers
- Add, subtract and multiply decimal numbers
- Recognise basic fractions and calculate fractions of a quantity
- Calculate simple percentages
- Write large numbers in words and figures
- Round numbers e.g. to the nearest hundred
- some metric conversion
- apply these skills to solve some everyday problems.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Classes will consist of whole group teaching and small group work. There will be group discussion of specific topics, an opportunity to share ideas with others and problem solving exercises. The teaching will be activity based and there will be regular homework assignments. You should be prepared to do regular homework to reinforce and extend skills learned in class.
Our support department provides support to students with disabilities, dyslexia or mental health issues. Please discuss with your tutor in the first instance.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a lined A4 pad, pens and a folder for assignments. You will need to buy a an appropriate calculator. Your tutor will give you details of this. You will also need some maths equipment e.g. a ruler, a protractor, compasses and pencils.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You should be able to start your Maths GCSE in September. You will need to do our GCSE maths assessment to check that you are ready and have an interview with a tutor to discuss your assessment and the course commitment.
