Piano masterclass

Course Dates: 04/12/19 - 11/12/19
Time: 18:40 - 21:40
Location: KS - Keeley Street

An intensive masterclass for pianists at Grade 8 standard and above, comprising two three-hour sessions. This insightful class will address issues of interpretation and style as well as dealing with technique. This year we are delighted to welcome Carole Cerasi who will be focussing on playing pre-Beethoven repertoire on a modern piano. Ideal repertoire for this class would be: Bach, Sons of Bach (CPE especially), Scarlatti, Haydn or Mozart.

Description

What is the course about?

This is a practical masterclass to explore repertoire and examine interpretation. It aims to help you see the music within its larger historic/stylistic concept while at the same time helping you to focus on particular details to achieve your best performance.

The class is limited to 8 performers who will play a 20 minute session each on both evenings. Please consider these time constraints when choosing your repertoire as you may wish to present just short section of a piece to allow time to work on it with the tutor.

What will we cover?

Please prepare two pieces to bring to the class (you will be timetabled to play one piece each evening). Please let the music office know your choices by 29th November 2019 so that we can inform all students of the repertoire in advance of the first session. You may wish to bring study-scores to follow your classmate’s repertoire. Email: [email protected]

Recommeded repertoire:
- CPE Bach
- Scarlatti sonatas
- Mozart sonatas
- Haydn sonatas.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Make informed expressive decisions about issues such as pedalling, articulation, phrasing and realise them in your playing
- Understand how to interpret notational/editorial ambiguities in the context of the style and period
- Ornamentation
- respond to constructive critique.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You must play to a minimum standard of Grade 8, and be able to respond quickly to the suggestions of the tutor.
You need to be able to follow written and verbal instruction in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Individual performances and tuition masterclass-style, including tutor demonstration and group listening/discussion.
You need to prepare your piece well beforehand, but you are not expected to play from memory.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring along 2 copies of the music you are playing. Please inform the music office of the repertoire you intend to play by 29th November 2019- [email protected]

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

If you are not already receiving regular piano tuition, you may be interested in enrolling on one of Build's Piano Workshops (contact the music department for advice to determine which level is suitable).

You may also wish to broaden your general musicianship through courses in Music theory (all levels to Grade 8), Practical Musicianship (e.g. Dalcroze, Kodaly, Hindemith Method, Keyboard harmony & improvisation), or one of Build's wide range of music appreciation classes.
