  1. Science guest lecture: Solar physicist Simon Foster on our living star

Science guest lecture: Solar physicist Simon Foster on our living star

Course Date: Thu 6 Jun 2019
Location on this date: KS - Keeley Street
In this lecture, Dr Simon Foster a Solar-terrestrial physicist and lecturer based at Imperial College London, will give us a close-up view of the star which, even in its minutest changes, can have huge impacts on life on Earth.

Our sun is a dynamic living star, just like many others in the night’s sky. However, with our close proximity we can study it in amazing detail but we are also affected by its frequent changes and temperamental outbursts such as with solar flares. We’ll be looking inside the star, looking at what powers it has and how we made these discoveries. We'll also look out through its surface and on towards Earth, assessing its unique significance for how we live.

Simon Foster's area of specialism is using sunspot records to investigate current and historic variations in the Sun’s energy output called the Total Solar Irradiance. In addition he is also active in the public engagement activities of Imperial College London and is a frequent contributor in the media in the areas of Space science and physics and is one of the scientists on Sky One’s Science panel show Duck Quacks Don’t Echo.

  2. The physics of time

Course Date: Sat 20 Jul 2019
Location on this date: KS - Keeley Street
We will explore the various different conceptions of time within modern physics. The absolute time of Newtonian mechanics is contrasted with the relativistic time of Einsteinian gravity. The possibility that time is quantized, made up of discrete moments, is seen to emerge in some of the most cutting edge theories of physics, such as loop quantum gravity and string theory. The emergence of time in the big bang, the direction of time, and the possibility of time travel are all explored.
