Photograph City of London architecture

Course Dates: 29/10/19 - 19/11/19
Time: 14:00 - 17:00
Location: PS - Photography Studio
Grant Smith

Learn to beautifully capture the stunning architecture around us in London's cityscape. Get out and about on location, discovering different architectural styles and how best to photograph them, considering everything from time of day and angle of view, to how to deal with security guards when photographing in public, and how to effectively edit and process your shots.

What is the course about?

This intermediate level course will give students a thorough grounding in appreciating different architectural styles and how best to capture them on camera. As well as looking at particular architects' work, we'll guide you practically through judging the best time of day to photograph, what angle to take a shot from, what lens to use, and how to work safely and legally when out and about (with tips on situations like dealing with security guards when photographing from public space). Two of the sessions will take place on location in the City of London, as well as sessions in the studio learning to edit and process your images.

What previous students liked most about this course: “Tutor’s expertise and encouraging manner. Practice on site – not all theory or viewing familiar images!”
“The onsite photography sessions. Explaining what to look for on site and to use in practice. Also the review at the end helped massively.”
“Taking a new look at what I thought was familiar. The experience/ expertise of the tutor (Grant).”

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an intermediate level class. You should be able to operate the manual functions of your camera, and have an interest in architecture and the built environment. You need to be computer literate at a basic level and have control of the functions of your camera. Please note that we will be using Apple Macs, not PCs, although all the software used on this course is cross-platform. If you have never used a computer before, you might find our course ‘An introduction to Apple computers’ useful - these run each term.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A structured programme of lectures, demonstrations, and practical exercises at locations in the City and back at the studio. Each student will have their own computer to work on at the studio. Students may want to continue working outside of class to build their portfolio.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may wish to bring some images on a CD or memory stick for discussion. You will also need a digital camera and a notebook and pen as you are encouraged to take notes. Build has cameras you may borrow during lesson time if you cannot supply your own.

If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, Build students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer.
