  3. Experimental and Postmodern music: Satie and beyond

    Explore experimental and postmodern classical music from Satie to the present day. We will look at Satie’s piano work and his influence on John Cage and Laurence Crane. We will look at American minimal and minimalist composers Steve Reich, James Tenney and Pauline Oliveros as well as the British experimental tradition of Cardew’s Scratch Orchestra. We will survey key contemporary experimental works as well as exploring Fluxus, sampling, materiality and post-internet music. This course has a scheduled break week: 30th May.
