Modern calligraphy

Learn how to write elegant, stylish letterforms using a flexible pointed nib with ink. Once you have learnt how to write a basic alphabet, we will begin breaking the rules of traditional calligraphy to find a style that is all your own.


What is the course about?

Take pleasure in creating your own modern calligraphy script. This 10 week course will teach you how to create a cursive writing style that is truly your own. You will be using a flexible, pointed nib to write letterforms inspired by traditional copperplate calligraphy but with a contemporary twist.

What will we cover?

You’ll begin with the basics such as learning how to use a flexible nib, creating a basic alphabet and writing capital letterforms. Then you’ll explore how to create your own style, incorporate flourishes and writing with different coloured inks.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

1. Write a cohesive alphabet with a flexible nibs
2. Use different inks and papers

For more advanced learners:
1. Use a flexible nib to write longer pieces of text.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This class is suitable for complete beginners and left and right-handers.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group and individual demonstrations supported by discussions and visual references, but mainly learning by doing. It would be beneficial if you could do some practise between sessions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials are provided for use during class and advice on buying equipment will be given by the
tutor during the course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
