What is the course about?

On this 1-day workshop, you will learn how to focus your awareness, cultivate calmness and develop non-judgemental acceptance through a range of mindfulness practices. This course can help you apply speech techniques more effectively and facilitate your work on avoidance reduction. It can also help you with stress management.

What will we cover?

What mindfulness is
The relevance of mindfulness work to stammering
Developing awareness of thoughts, feelings and behaviour
How to become more focused
A variety of mindfulness practices including the 3-minute space
How to manage difficult thoughts and feelings more effectively
The importance and helpfulness of acceptance
Setting up an ongoing practice schedule.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of the course you should be able to:
Identify the relevance of mindfulness work to stammering
Be more aware of the triggers of stammering and be more able to respond helpfully to these
Apply a variety of mindfulness practices on a daily basis
Have a greater acceptance of aspects of your experience, including stammering.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for people who stammer. No previous knowledge is necessary although it would be helpful for students to have had some previous speech therapy. To access the course you will need to have an adequate level of English to:
- Express your opinions and feelings
- Follow discussions and make relevant contributions
- Make use of handouts with some assistance if necessary
Before joining the class you will need to speak to one of the Speech Therapy team.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by a specialist stammering therapist who is also a mindfulness teacher, and one of the UK's leading mindfulness teachers.

This is a highly practical course. Each session you will participate in mindfulness practices led by the tutors. Home practice is an integral and essential part of the course. You will have access to free MP3 downloads to help you continue the practices in between sessions and after the course has ended.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. Helpful to wear comfortable clothing.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may choose to do another topic-based workshop course within our programme.
