Course Dates: 02/02/20 - 01/03/20
Time: 10:45 - 13:15
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Sara Dhillon

For graduates of Latin piano 1, or players with similar experience. Develop your playing, and tackle Cuban and Brazilian tunes with more complex harmonic content. We will play percussion as well as practising piano parts.

What is the course about?

This practical course is for intermediate pianists who have completed Latin Piano 1, or can demonstrate equivalent ability to play in latin styles. We will take a closer look at the role of the piano in Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian music. The course will focus on rhythm, playing different styles/grooves and more advanced concepts in soloing. You will play digital pianos and percussion in class in order to experience playing in a Latin music ensemble.

What will we cover?

Cuban Salsa, Son Montuno, Mambo, Cha-cha-cha, Bolero and Afro-Brazillian music.
Approaches to soloing in these styles.
Montunos and how to play them, including common variations.
The percussion instruments used in Salsa (congas, bongos, clave, guiro, cowbells) and their associated rhythms/patterns.
Percussion instruments used in Afro-Brazillian music and their rhythm patterns.
We will learn classic tunes.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand the function of the piano in Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian music and learn how to play in these styles.
- Be able to distinguish between song types, e.g. Mambo, Bossa Nova, etc.
- Be able to solo in a competent way incorporating appropriate harmonic and rhythmic ideas.
- Have a better understanding of how to improve your music reading in this style.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is designed for intermediate players at Grade 5 (ABRSM) or higher with sight-reading skills at that level. You must have experience of playing latin piano styles, and be able to follow the most common chord symbols found in standard tunes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through practical playing sessions on the digital pianos, with feedback from the tutor. We will listen to, and copy, musical examples. You will be set rhythmic and harmonic exercises to help you play in this style. You will be provided with backing tracks for practice outside of the class time.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A notebook and some manuscript paper. We recommend you record parts of the session.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

There are a range of pop, jazz and classical piano courses. Among them is the Afro-Cuban big band!
If the course you want to attend is starred you will need to attend an informal audition to ensure the level is right for you.
