What is the course about?
Learn the basics of Latin and apply them to artefacts and inscriptions held at the British Museum.
What will we cover?
The foundations of Latin grammar. Details will be provided at the start of the course by the tutor.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Read and translate simple phrases in Latin.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable if you are a complete beginner. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group activities.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will combine classroom work with visits each week to the galleries. The classroom-based activities will follow the traditional approach but will aim at a high level of student interaction with pair and group work. Students are expected to participate in the activities and to do homework every week.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please purchase Latin Inscriptions, by Dirk Booms (British Museum Press 2001), ISBN 9780714122885.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
A progression course at the British Museum or at Build. The tutor will be able to advise you.
General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.
