Continue to study Latin grammar and improve your fluency in reading and translating Latin. Based on the first edition

of Reading Latin (Cambridge University Press, 1986; 2 vols).

Description

What is the course about?

You will improve your fluency in reading and translating Latin as well as your knowledge of the grammar. Based on the first edition of the Reading Latin book (Cambridge University Press, 1986; 2 vols)..

What will we cover?

We shall be using the textbook Reading Latin (2 vols), starting at Section 5F (please check with the tutor through the Classical Languages and Civilisations Department for the exact point to start at). Reading of Latin passages will be combined with revision of the grammar.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- demonstrate greater knowledge of Latin grammar;
- translate passages in prose by Sallust and Cicero;
- translate original poems by Catullus and appreciate themes, language and style of his poetry.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have studied Latin for four years. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Whole class work and group work; translation and grammar exercises; tutor posing questions and answering questions raised by the students. About 2-3 hours homework per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Textbook: Reading Latin, ed. by Peter Jones & Keith Sidwell (Cambridge University Press, 1986; 2 vols) (CUP). Some copies available in the Build Library. Please note that we will continue to use the old edition of the book in this course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Latin 4 upper: module 2 in January.

General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.
