Improve your knowledge of Latin grammar and your ability to read and write Latin.

What is the course about?

This course is designed for students who have studied some beginners level Latin and wish to improve their knowledge of Latin grammar and their ability to read and write Latin. We use the textbooks Reading Latin, by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell, starting from section 1F.

What will we cover?

We will cover grammatical structures including:
• Future indicative active
• Irregular verbs possum, nolo, malo
• 4th & 5th declension nouns
• Deponent verbs
We will also be reading extracts from Plautus' play Amphitruo.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Have a developing knowledge of Latin grammatical structures
• Be familiar with a broader range of vocabulary
• Have gained confidence in translating from and into Latin.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is designed for students who have been learning Latin for around six months to one year. It will start at the end of Section 1F of the textbook Reading Latin by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell. The course is taught in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on Reading Latin by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell. In each class we translate passages of Latin into English and cover a grammar topic with a mixture of group and individual work. Homework is set each week: usually a written exercise and some vocab and grammar to learn (maximum of 1-2 hours homework per week).

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need the two textbooks by Peter Jones & Keith Sidwell, Reading Latin, 2nd edition, CUP, ‘Grammar and Exercises’ (ISBN 9781107632264) and ‘Text and Vocabulary’ (ISBN 9781107618701). Please make sure that you obtain the SECOND editions, published in 2016.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Progress to Latin 2 Module 2 in January.

General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.

Don’t hesitate - really good. The class works hard as a group, the teaching is excellent, the vibe is challenging but not intimidating.

The teacher, Maddalena, is excellent: knowledgeable, organised, student focused, supportive, as well being a thoroughly nice person. Even if you haven't studied Latin for some time, it's amazing how much and how quickly things come back to you from the cobwebbed corners of memory.
