What is the course about?

Consolidate and develop the work covered in jazz guitar 2. Play more advanced harmony in a jazz context, and study more standards. Practice improvising over the study tunes.

What will we cover?

Allied to a study tune, we will work on arpeggios, modes & scales, chord shapes, playing a melody, improvising, rhythms for 'comping', walking bass strategy, and ensemble playing.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Learn new and challenging repertoire
- Enjoy greater facility using scales to improvise over a chord progression
- Play in time with a confident jazz style
- play with confidence, and listen, as part of an ensemble.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

In order to get the most from this course, you should be conversant with jazz chords (major 7th, dominant, minor 7th, half-diminished shapes), know the note names on the finger board up to the 12th fret, be able to play major and minor scales, demonstrate reasonable fluency at reading chord symbols and music notation & guitar tab.
You should have completed jazz guitar 2.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through group playing sessions, with some solo playing usually by turn. Daily guitar practice and completion of homework tasks are essential to your progress and the smooth running of the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All music teaching materials will be supplied. Please bring manuscript, notebook, pencil, guitar tuner and an acoustic guitar.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This is a great course, that follows on from Jazz Guitar 1 and 2, each course building on the other. Lots of material packed in a very short amount of space, and delivered with excellent teaching, modes, chords, and improvisation all delivered in the short space of 12 weeks. Great course, and if you are fairly new to Jazz guitar totally worth starting at JG1 and working your way through to JG2 and then JG3.

Great follow on from Jazz 2. A huge amount of material over too few weeks, it needs many months to get this under your fingers. Encouraging, practical approach to any tune. And the enthusiasm remains infectious.
