I did this course last year and thoroughly recommend it. The teacher is amazing, and her class materials (with some of her own drawings/cartoons) are fun and useful. The first module in particular is really enjoyable and you learn a lot in a short space of time. It is not essential to know hiragana and katakana before you start, but quite helpful if you can at least start to learn this beforehand, as I it can really help to add interest and meaning, but certainly don't be put off if you haven't done so (I thought you had to know it, so tried to learn as much as possible beforehand). I continued through all the fast track modules for Japanese 1 and loved it so much, I have continued with the "normal" pace course for Japanese 2 lower.
