If you’re unable to pay this upfront, you can choose to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan from the Student Loans Company to help cover the course fee, repayable after the course ends. What is the course about?

Completing this course will earn you a Diploma in Massage and the ability to work in the field of complementary therapy as either an employed or self employed practitioner. You'll also be able to join a professional body such as the Complementary Therapists Association (CThA) and gain insurance via EMBODY or other providers that recognise this qualification. The course will provide you with an avenue of learning to reach the required standard set by the governing body ITEC (International Therapies Examinations Council) and become a proficient massage practitioner.

You should be aware that a minimum of 80% attendance is necessary to complete the course. You are also expected to participate to the best of your ability and to adhere to the colleges Equal Opportunities Policy while undertaking the course. The policies of the college will be discussed during the first session.

Practical exam date: 27th April 2019.

What will we cover?

This is an integrated course consisting of four units
Unit 383: Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for Complementary Therapies
Unit 380: Provide Body Massage for Complementary Therapies
Unit 384: Principles and Practice of Complementary Therapists
Unit 385: Business Practice for Complementary Therapies.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Name the structures and functions of the body systems
- Explain the interdependence of the body systems and how each system responds to massage
- Recognise and name the symptoms and causes of common pathological conditions that can affect each system
- Perform a full body massage in a commercially accepted time.
- Use the practical and theoretical skills required to provide massage treatments for the purposes of relaxation and stress release
- Take a client consultation and gather the necessary information to provide a client-specific treatment and aftercare
- Recognise when not to massage (knowledge of contra indications)
- Understand the concept of contra actions (healing crisis)
- Compare and differentiate between the different complementary therapies
- Have a basic understanding of building and maintaining your own business practice
- Have a good working knowledge of the regulations and legislation to safeguard and implement Health and Safety within a complementary practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a Level 3 course. There are no prerequisites required, however, due to the intensity of this course we strongly advise that you enrol onto the following courses: Introductory massage/bodywork course; Introductory/Access to ITEC Anatomy and Physiology course.
You will also need to have sufficient literacy, numeracy and ICT skills to include:
Reading: Be able to use different texts to obtain and summarise information; Detect opinion, meaning and respond to points made within a text.
Writing: Use different styles, format and structure, formal and informal for different purposes or audiences; Write complex sentences with few errors.
Speaking/listening: Be able to listen to information and respond appropriately; Present information clearly and adapt verbal contributions to suit the audience and situation including discussions.
Numeracy/Maths: Extract, interpret and create information from lists, tables, graphs and charts; Understand percentages and fractions, using halves and quarters.
ICT (Information and communication technology): Use ICT systems including Windows, Microsoft Office; Find, select and exchange information using web and email; Work with word processing.

Please note that you are required to obtain a First Aid Certificate whilst on the course or be working towards one; Build offers one day Emergency First Aid at Work courses.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching methods include lecture, discussions, group work, wordstorming, Q&A and role play alongside practical sessions with demonstrations and pair work.

Outside of class, a minimum of ten hours of home study per week is essential to successfully complete this course. You will need access to a massage couch, and to find clients to undertake treatment evidences and case studies outside of the class room time. You will also need to have access to a computer and the internet to research and write up your course projects.

Please note this is a professional practitioner course including business and health and safety elements. The use of ITC (Information and Communication Technology) skills are a pre-requisite, and all assignments, case studies and treatment evidence forms must be word processed. Build is committed to the delivery of functional skills. The supported Learning Centre has various resources available for students without access to computers or the internet.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You are required to wear a professional uniform for the practical elements and the exams of all ITEC courses. The cost of the uniform is included in the course fee. The college will provide each student with one (unisex) uniform (shoes not included). There is no reduction in course fees for students wishing to provide their own uniform, which must meet the standards set by the institute.

You will need to purchase the following items to bring to class.
- Practical session: Massage oil (sweet almond or grapeseed); Two large bath sheets / four hand towels; One fitted couch cover; Antibacterial wet wipes; Box of paper tissue; Box of small plasters; Hairband and hairgrip.
- Theory sessions: Course books, folders for handouts, paper, pens, pencils and colouring pencils, highlighters

For the practical exams you will also need a set of white towels and a basic First Aid Box. It is also advisable to have an up-to-date First Aid certificate for the exams.

The exam fee is included in the course cost. This fee is non-refundable and the exams must be taken on the date set by the institute. As an accredited course you will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence, which may incur charges for printing, photocopying and stationery not included in the course fees.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Follow up with other professional practitioner courses such as: Deep Tissue Massage; Advanced Massage Techniques, On Site massage; Indian Head Massage; Lymphatic Drainage Massage; or one of our many CPD courses.

The fast track course was an excellent course. Having no prior massage experience I was coached from the very basics into a professional within 13 weeks! What you put in is what you get out though so be prepared to work your socks off and reap the rewards!

The level 3 diploma in massage is a fast track 13 weeks course which has both theoretical and practical elements.

I would highly recommended this course to any prospective students mainly because the tutor was a fab teacher; caring, knowledgeable, and supportive.

Build also has great facilities, and staff team they’re well equipped to support you, should you need their help for anything.
