If you have creative flair and would like to learn the skills necessary to design the interior of your home or make a step towards a new career, then this is the course for you.

What is the course about?

On this practical short course you will learn how to design the interior space of one room to use as a starting point for further rooms. This could be a room in your home that needs updating or an interior space for a friend or colleague.

You will learn about determining space requirements, generating design ideas and selecting decorative items, such as colours, lighting, furnishings and materials.
You will also learn how to create and interpret a plan and elevation drawing and gain an awareness of relevant regulations and standards.

What will we cover?

- determining project goals and objectives
- generating ideas for the aesthetic and functional possibilities of the space
- developing plans and specifications relative to interior spaces
- selecting and specifying fixtures, furnishings, products, materials and colours
- relevant building and safety codes.

- list key building and safety codes that apply to domestic interior spaces.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course. No previous experience required but an enthusiasm for Interior Design is essential.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. You will be encouraged to carry out some preparatory research and design work for the course. This will be discussed with you by your tutor in the first session.
