What is the course about?

This first level course will enable you to develop an appreciation of the subject. We will focus on contemporary design. You will see examples of designs from practitioners with an international reputation that will inform and inspire project work. Creative disciplines are grounded in technical ability and here you will be encouraged to develop elementary skills in 3D visualization. These skills will equip you to produce a design for an interior: giving you the confidence to progress and reshape your own home.

One of the sessions is taught off site in the form of a Study Visit. The venue / location is wheelchair accessible and the acoustics are good.

What previous students liked about the course:
““Very calm and encouraging environment. A great introduction to interior design.”
“The opportunity to learn about something that has mystified and interested me for years.”
“I liked the fact that technical knowledge was also included and a site visit was done for more practice view of concepts.”
“Experience drawing plans to scale and building a model. Discussions on the principles of design.”
“Keith’s enthusiasm ; ) ”
“Open discussion, practical exercise (project), practical feedback, group feedback.”
“The fact that we were taught by an architect who is also an interior designer. He pushed us to do plans/elevations and models. Good site visit to the South Bank”

What will we cover?

- 2D drawing and elementary model making
- Appreciation of the subject with reference to space planning, colour, lighting, ergonomics and composition
- Analyse user requirements
- Nature of the design process/ design concept
- Ways of presenting design ideas: verbally and graphically.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Demonstrate 2D drawing in the form of a plan and elevation at a scale of 1:50
- Produce a design for a single space
- Demonstrate how user requirements influence design
- Analyse the steps involved in creating a designed space
- Produce graphical material that describes an Interior.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginners level course.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It would be preferable for you to purchase a 150mm long scale for your use- this can be purchased cheaply and your Tutor will advise you. A note pad, pen and pencils should also be brought to the teaching sessions.

If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, Build students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer. Your tutor will advise you on what you should buy. You will need to show your enrolment receipt in-store to receive your discount. I loved that we worked on a project and had feedback - it helped me plan my bathroom.

The course focuses very much on drawings and model making, all of which gives a technical understanding. It is not for those who wish to explore colours, space, light, moods, fabrics, new ideas, etc.
