Develop intermediate desktop publishing skills using InDesign on Apple Macs. Construct and lay out a multi column, multi page document. Work with text to create, apply and import styles, set up and apply master pages and learn good working practices.


What is the course about?

You will develop the intermediate skills you need to create more exciting publications. You will gain an insight into the intermediate features of the InDesign page layout program, using Apple Macs.

What will we cover?

- Planning and designing complex publications.
- Preparing and cleaning up placed (imported) text
- More advanced text formatting features e.g., tracking and kerning, hanging indents, and paragraph rules.
- Introduction to Open Type and some of its features.
- Using master pages (parent and child) and copy flow.
- Creating, applying and loading paragraph styles (including sequential/next styles)
- Working with colour including, editing and importing colours, the principles of trapping and colour separation.
- Working with placed images.
- Looking at InDesign preferences.
- Quick keystrokes and hints.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Apply manual, semi-automatic and automatic text flow
- Perform basic cleaning of text bought in from Word
- Layout a multi-column, multi-page document.
- Work with text to create, apply and import styles.
- Create and apply Sequential (next) styles to selected text
- Set up and apply parent and child master pages.
- Apply good working practices (file identification, naming and saving conventions).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to be able to perform the print production tasks using InDesign covered in InDesign Stage 1. If you have not done the InDesign
Stage 1 course please check the course outline to see that you are familiar with what was covered

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student has their own computer. Presentations will be made using computers, whiteboard, overhead screen and printed notes. Step by step instruction, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can develop your skills further in CID09 In design stage 3. You can also compliment your skills in a range of courses in Photoshop, Illustrator and Graphic design.
