  2. Godzilla and the emergence of modern Japan

    This course examines the dual origins of Ishiro Honda’s Godzilla/Gojira (1954) – that of the suppression of the supernatural in Japanese society and the impact of the atomic bomb upon the Japanese psyche.     Join tutor John Wischmeyer for a 6 week course on Barbara Stanwyck in the BFI Studio on the Southbank. Brooklyn born Ruby Stevens was orphaned at four, a Ziegfeld showgirl by sixteen. One of her first roles was in the pre-code film, Forbidden. We will view extracts and discuss an astonishing range of Stanwyck’s movies, from wild screwball comedy to darkest noir, from The Lady Eve to Forty Guns. Stanwyck is an icon of cinema - a worldly, attractive and independent woman in a man’s world.
