Learn to speak Hindi and develop your listening and speaking skills in this communicative class which emphasises the practical use of the language. Suitable for complete beginners. Based on Teach Yourself Beginner's Hindi.

Description

What is the course about?

To enable you to converse in basic everyday situations in Hindi and also to introduce you to the written form of the language.

What will we cover?

Introducing yourself, talking about your family, saying what you do and where you live, numbers, reading and writing the Hindi alphabet.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- introduce yourself and greet people
- talk about where you’re from and what you do
- talk about your family
- recognise and be able to write some Hindi script
- use nouns, pronouns, demonstrative pronouns and possessive pronouns
- formally and informally address people
- start understanding sentence structure
- use interrogatives -who/what/how
- use first, second and third person and using auxiliary verb and other verbs
- use numbers, genders, postpositions.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for complete beginners. Also suitable for students who have attended a short intensive course in Hindi or have a basic knowledge of the language but who would like to start again from the beginning, consolidate and progress rapidly.
This course is at a slightly faster pace than our regular courses as it is part of our 3 modules in 2 terms courses.
You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Hindi beginners: module 2/3 in April.
After module 2/3 you will be able to progress to Hindi 2 in September.
