Glazing your work

Course Dates: 15/09/19
Time: 14:00 - 17:00
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Josie Warshaw

For students who have attended our ceramics summer courses, this is an opportunity to return and glaze your fired work. Basic glazing techniques will be taught, with advice on which glazes to use.

What is the course about?

This practical course covers how to glaze your fired work.

What will we cover?

This half-day course will cover the difference between stoneware and earthenware glazes and firing temperatures. It
will explain briefly the nature of a glaze and how to apply glazes. Following the workshop, glazed work will then be
fired, ready for collection later in the term. As part of the workshop you will be encouraged to keep notes, or update an existing sketchbook, on your glazing decisions.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Explain the difference between stoneware and earthenware
- Demonstrate how to effectively and safely glaze your finished work, by dipping, pouring or brushing glazes
- Make decisions on which standard department glazes to use to enhance your ceramic work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is only aimed at students who have already completed one or more summer schools in July or August
and whose summer school work will have been fired to bisque over the summer holidays. The half-day workshops are suitable both for beginners and for more advanced students.

Please do not book this course if you have not attended a summer school course in July or August 2017.

You should be able to follow simple verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs, for health and
safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be taught through a mixture of practical demonstrations, group discussion, 1:1 advice and support.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no additional costs for this workshop as a firing charge will have been applied during summer schools.
Although most ceramic materials are covered by the course fee, there is a charge of £1.80 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £17.50 per bag/ £8.75 per half bag. Please ask your course tutor. Tools are available within the department for use but you may want to purchase your own.

If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, Build students receive 10%
discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer. Your tutor will advise you on what you
should buy. You will need to show your enrolment receipt in-store to receive your discount. Visit the Charing Cross
shop at 13 Charing Cross Road WC2H 0EP or find your local shop at *Terms and conditions

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

At the end of the course you will be given information about further courses available for those who wish to continue.

Within Build you could progress onto the Build Ceramics course - VR710, the Ceramics Portfolio Course - VR711 or the Diploma Course in Ceramics - VR712, all of which are structured courses that can lead to higher education or independent studio practice.

General information and advice on courses at Build is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.
