Description

What is the course about?

The course will allow students to revise the grammatical structures and vocabulary introduced during the third module of Classical Greek 1 so that they can confidently start the first module of Classical Greek 2.

What will we cover?

We shall be using the textbook Reading Greek (2nd edition, 2 vols), a textbook designed for adult learners, based on original Greek sources. We shall start our revision from section 4A-B and aim at completing section 4C-D.
Students will read adapted passages included in the Reading Greek: Text and Vocabulary volume; reading will be combined with grammar instruction and grammatical exercises. We shall read passages from Section Four, “Lawlessness in Athenian life”.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- demonstrate some knowledge of the present indicative of non-contract and contract verbs in the active and middle voices
- demonstrate some basic knowledge of the formation and functions of present participles
- demonstrate some knowledge of the declension of nouns, adjectives and pronouns, in all three declensions
- have some insight into the derivation of English words
- have some insight into the world of ancient Greece.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for those who have already completed Classical Greek 1: Module 3, or who have equivalent experience. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in group discussions on readings.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on a traditional teaching approach, yet it aims also at a high level of student interaction with some pair and group work. Please note that students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do 2-3 hours homework per session.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
